that is most antagonistic toward president obama. i think he got 30% + of white men to vote for him. he was down in those categories, but white men are the heart and soul of it. you say he is the most divisive. i think we live in very divisive times in terms of our politics, in terms of our media spending it is highly polarized here in the congress. people who do not want to compromise see compromise as a dirty word and are worried they are threatened by the other side spending the whole idea of politics having to see good in the other side and were there is possibility of common ground has gone away. i do not think you are wrong in saying that president obama's era is one of the most divisive in american history and i question whether or not he has a divisive personality. i think his approval ratings in terms of -- he is close to 50%. personally, there are lots of americans including white men who like him, but they do not like his policy. the economic policies in particular tend to be highly divisive in america at this moment. host: part of his speech talked about his hopes going forw

. >> just joining us, so much has happened in the past couple of hours. president obama met with congressional leaders at 3:00. no offer on the part of the president. the leaders came out with very different messages. senator mcconnell said we had a good meeting down at the white house. hopeful and optimistic. senator reid says the meeting was constructive. the president just came out from a statement about 20 minutes ago from the briefing room of the white house saying the time for immediate action is here and is now. he's urging senators reid and mcconnell to come up with some sort of a plan. if that does not work and they don't many up with a plan, his next option is to urge senator reid to put to the senate a simple up-or-down vote on a slimmed down plan that will prevent taxes from rising on middle class americans and based on unemployment insurance benefits. there you have it. that's the very latest at this point, again, senatored reid and mcconnell hard at work hopefully on some sort of a deal. and the next time we'll hear from the president will be on the "meet the p

negotiations fall apart with president obama last week, so we're waiting for this proposal to see kind of what shape it takes. the white house wants those bush era tax cuts on the first quarter million dollars of earnings to be preserved, that's what the white house has been pushing. it's unclear if that is going to be the proposal that harry reid puts out, if maybe it will go higher in order to get some republican support. we don't know at this point and we understand talking to sources, to democratic sources, drew, that even though the senate is reconvening on thursday, it may be a couple more days before we see proposal as they try to not only get republican support but build pressure on the house. they will move the unveiling of their proposal as close to the new year as possible to essentially say here is our proposal, assuming they get it through the senate, here is our propos proposal, what we passed, you have to take it up or the fiscal cliff we're about to go over we're going to blame you for it, drew. >> brianna, do you know how closely senator reid and his staff are working with the

or with his upcoming appearance, has that really given president obama the leverage in this debate? >> i certainly think it has helped because what this president has been good at i think throughout his tenure through the white house and definitely through the campaign is making the issues that he is fighting for and that he has been talking about relevant to everyday americans. and he has been asking for those same americans to make their voices heard with their congressional leaders. and as we all know, there is no one more important to congressional leaders than their own constituents back home. and so when the president asked constituents to let congressional leaders know what it's going to mean to them if their taxes rise on january 1, then leaders are going to hear from their constituents back home. i think that's a very powerful piece of pressure that washington actually does respond it. so i think he has been very adepartment at that. i think it is -- adept at that. i think it is something that helped him through his first term and will help through his second term, as well. >> c
